Cape Dance return to the Fringe for the first time since 2007, with two programmes of distinctive, edgy and athletic dance by revered South African and international choreographers.
Both programmes include Brazilian/American Carlos dos Santos’ work “Allesverloren … Alles Niet Verloren” - (All is lost … All is not lost). Also in the programme is “Treasures of the Heart” by Michael Thomas (USA) which captivates with its fluidity – a poetic pastoral work, reminiscent of the impressionist era in Degas style costuming.
Standing in juxtaposition are the more pulsing and rhythmical African fusion works, “Indlela” by Sbonakaliso Ndaba which includes the spine-tingling sounds of African djembe drums, “Soukora” by Kitty Phetla, & Gregory Maqoma’s “Molo Wethu”.
“Gladius” (Sword), originally created as a solo, has been extended into a full work by Debbie Turner, the Artistic Director of the CDC and also the Cape Academy of Performing Arts, one of Cape Town’s top training institutions established by Turner 25 years ago. “Gladius” explores the life of the gladiator who ultimately has to look death in the eye and it incorporates edgy, staccato movement coupled with a powerful electronic score keeping the audience riveted with subliminal feelings of anxiety, fear and ultimately, resignation.
"Diverse, imaginative ... Beautifully executed ... Drilled to perfection" **** Scotsman on CDC 2007
